Martin Szekely Presse Papier BD_001

1987

Martin Szekely (1956) has no need for introductions, demonstrating consistent design quality since he started out at the end of the 70s. Nevertheless a very large part of his work was privately commissioned and therefore remains unknown. The image of Martin Szekely’s work fluctuates between his furniture at the start of the 80s, the famous Pi collection and the Kreo period that dates from the end of the 90s. Between the two there is a sort of unknown, primarily wooden furniture, mainly for Galerie Néotù. The Presse-papiers storage, 1987, is undoubtedly one of the best examples of furniture that toys with both a pronounced aesthetic of straight lines and curves from the start of the 80s, and a form of radicalisation. The latter here is MDF. Medium Density Fibreboard is an economical material that was developed at this time. Often painted or stained, here it is perfectly crafted and simply varnished, somehow lending it a precious quality.
