Philippe Starck, Jane Paille chairs for Driade / collection Aleph – Ubik

1987/1989

We love Philippe Starck’s unconventional objects. Unusual, rarely encountered objects uniting visibly opposing worlds. Jane Paille belongs to a series for Driade that was produced around 1987/1989. In this series Philippe Starck reinterprets the conventional chair with a wooden frame and straw bottom. Is it a nod to Charlotte Perriand? More of a return to roots as reflected by the names of the various models: Anna Rustica, Bob Dubois, Tessa Nature and Jane Paille. A return to basics that is reminiscent of Philippe Starck’s very first work, the Crisis Collection. The simplicity and ergonomics of the projects are not as fundamental as their obvious place in the history of the chair in its most common form.
