Lighting is not the most developed design category in the works of Ettore Sottass Jr. Nevertheless his lights can be particularly compelling. Invited by the Japanese brand Yamagiwa, for whom he has acted as consultant since 1969, to design a series of lights, he designed 30 and 15 of them came to fruition. Traditional Japanese lights and architecture inspired the series. The formal simplicity of the Twenty Seven lamp is a remarkable feature and it has great visual strength. Although it is produced in lacquered sheet metal, the shape gives more an impression of a solid block from which a chunk has been removed. Sottsass said « I finished by designing small boxes (in the Japanese manner), boxes that become columns, or beams, or stacks of boxes, with different variations ».
