Scintilla table lamp by Piero Castiglioni for Fontana Arte

DSC01323
Available
1984

Radical and attractive are the best way to describe this pair of Piero Castiglioni lamps. The Scintilla lamp is a perfect combination of function and elegance. Why do the Scintilla base and lampshade have this shape and these sorts of fins? A cursory look at the light reveals that they both have components that heat. The lampshade contains bulbs and the base a transformer. The fin system increases the cooling surface. Castiglioni goes above and beyond following the precepts of his predecessors – he is clever enough to up the game by adding colour to the rod that supports the lampshade. This transforms a functional object into a poetic object. Painted aluminium. Two G4 20w halogen bulbs.
